Since December 8, 2018, to apply for Italian citizenship through marriage, the spouse must have adequate knowledge of the Italian language and have obtained a B1 proficiency certificate.

The most recognized Italian language certifications are the CELI (Italian Certification as a Foreign Language) and CILS (Certification of Italian as a Foreign Language).

Language proficiency levels follow the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages, which defines six levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2, ranging from a beginner user (level A1) to a native-speaking user (level C2).

The B1 level certification demonstrates intermediate proficiency and the ability to use the Italian language for everyday interaction, proving the applicant’s ability to live, work, or study in Italy. A B1 level demonstrates intermediate ability to communicate and understand topics commonly encountered in work, school, travel, and recreational scenarios. The applicant should be able to communicate simple concepts about themselves and their interests, and provide descriptions of events and experiences.
